A Proud History: The Rochester Show Since 1880

Proudly established in 1880, the Rochester Agricultural & Pastoral Association has been bringing the community together for over 140 years. What began as a modest gathering of local farmers and producers has grown into one of regional Victoria’s most enduring and beloved events. Early newspaper reports from the 1880s describe the excitement surrounding the show, with hundreds of entries in livestock, machinery, and produce — a testament to the area’s innovation, resilience, and agricultural pride.

While the show has evolved over time, its heart remains the same: celebrating local talent, rural life, and the power of community. Today, the Rochester Show offers a vibrant weekend packed with entertainment for all ages. Visitors can enjoy thrilling carnival rides, camel rides, a petting zoo, and live wildlife encounters. The popular cookie decorating and sensory play zones provide fun for the little ones, while Friday night’s Show & Shine car, bike, and ute display draws in crowds from near and far.

The showgrounds are alive with music, whip-cracking, working dog demos, and local performers. Inside the Homecraft Pavilion, you’ll find beautiful handmade goods, baked treats, and creative entries from across the district. Market stalls, food trucks, fairy floss, and gourmet eats ensure there’s something for every taste.

Whether you’re entering a competition, catching up with neighbours, or simply enjoying the sights and sounds with your family, the Rochester Show remains a true celebration of country life. It’s where history, heart, and community spirit come together — just as they have since 1880.

Celebrating Tradition and Community A Proud History: The Rochester Show

The Rochester Show has a proud and vibrant history dating back to 1880, when the seventh annual event was reported in The Argus newspaper picture 1886). Organised by the Rochester Agricultural and Pastoral Association (established in 1880), the show was already a key fixture in the district, drawing large crowds and showcasing the best of local farming, livestock, and produce. Even in its early years, the show attracted exhibitors from across Victoria, including displays from Melbourne businesses and machinery demonstrations that reflected the innovation of the times. This rich heritage continues to inspire today’s Rochester Show, celebrating over a century of community spirit and country excellence.
